About Us

My job is to help make your pet fit perfectly into your life and lifestyle.

It's not something I take lightly, and it's something I will focus my energy on and work hard at.

The difference I bring as a trainer is that I specialize in relationship changes through psychology and communication. I work lifestyles into the training, not just commands.

I take pride in building a business based on reliability, trust, honesty, and accountability. I will always show my passion for not only bettering the behavior of your pet, but also giving you and your dogs the confidence and mutual understanding to compliment each other's lives completely for many years to come.

By teaching you how to speak more clearly to your dog, and how to better understand their language through consistent work, structure, and the methods that I will introduce not only in your home, but in real world situations, we will be able to prevent and eliminate negative behaviors, and provide the balance needed to have a companion that you are proud to take with you on all of life's adventures.

Our Story

How Beardy and the Beast K9 Development came to be

Trainer with dogs

Beardy and the Beast K9 Development was founded out of a deep passion for dogs and a desire to help owners build stronger relationships with their pets. After years of working with dogs of all breeds, sizes, and temperaments, I realized that many training programs were missing a crucial element: the psychological connection between dogs and their owners.

What started as helping friends and family with their dog training needs quickly grew into a full-time commitment as word spread about my unique approach and successful results. I officially established Beardy and the Beast K9 Development to bring my specialized training methods to more dog owners in the Richmond area.

The name "Beardy and the Beast" reflects both my personal appearance and the transformation that can occur in dogs that others might consider "beastly" or difficult. Through proper training and understanding, even the most challenging dogs can become well-behaved, confident companions.

Today, I continue to expand my knowledge and refine my techniques to provide the best possible training experience for dogs and their owners. My goal remains the same: to help create harmonious relationships between dogs and their humans that will last a lifetime.

Experience & Credentials

A lifetime of learning and hands-on experience

Training Experience

With over a decade of experience working with dogs of all breeds, ages, and temperaments, I've developed a deep understanding of canine behavior and psychology. My hands-on experience includes:

  • Working with over 500 dogs and their owners
  • Addressing a wide range of behavioral issues from basic obedience to severe aggression
  • Developing customized training programs for individual dogs and their specific needs
  • Rehabilitating rescue dogs with traumatic backgrounds
  • Training service dogs for various assistance roles

Continuing Education

I believe in continuously expanding my knowledge and staying current with the latest developments in dog training and behavior. I regularly attend workshops, seminars, and training programs to enhance my skills and bring new techniques to my clients.

My Approach

My training philosophy is built on understanding each dog as an individual with unique needs, temperament, and learning style. I don't believe in one-size-fits-all training methods, but rather in adapting my approach to what works best for each dog and their owner.

I focus on building a strong foundation of trust and communication between dogs and their owners, which is essential for successful training and a harmonious relationship. My goal is not just to train your dog, but to empower you with the knowledge and skills to maintain that training for years to come.

What Our Clients Say

Real stories from dog owners who have experienced our training

"Working with Zach has been a game-changer for our family. Our German Shepherd had severe anxiety and reactivity issues that were making daily life stressful for everyone. Zach's patient, psychology-based approach helped us understand our dog's triggers and how to work through them. Now we have a calm, confident dog who we can take anywhere."

- Robert & Lisa K., Richmond

"I was at my wit's end with my rescue dog's behavior problems. He was aggressive toward other dogs and had severe separation anxiety. After just a few sessions with Zach, we started seeing improvement. What sets Zach apart is that he doesn't just train your dog—he teaches you how to communicate effectively with your dog. This has made all the difference."

- Amanda T., Midlothian

"As first-time dog owners, we were overwhelmed by our energetic Lab puppy. Zach provided us with the tools and confidence to raise a well-behaved dog. His training methods are clear, effective, and easy to implement in daily life. Our puppy is now a joy to be around, and we feel equipped to handle any challenges that come up."
